During my research it is suggested that if you do get cold winters to have a backup system as the ASHP are only good to between -10C and -15C depending on the brand. He also mentioned that he would add heating coils to the air handler so that it would act as a backup in case it happened to get really cold during the winter (not common but has dropped to -25C). He was the only one to suggest zoning our house so that when cooling was needed on the top level we wouldn't end up freezing on the lowest level and vice versa when heating was needed on the lower levels we wouldn't end up roasting on the top level. He carries Rheem one of the top rated brand of ASHP and he answered all of our questions while he was here doing the quote. A couple of companies suggested that to solve the problem we could just add wall mounted units upstairs to take care of our cooling needs on that floor of course that would end up costing more money and now we are running 2 systems and one had no idea of what to do and would have to get back to us which they never did. Several companies later we basically kept getting the same information that there wasn't much we could do about such a vast temperature difference between the 3 levels especially since the thermostat would have to be located on the top level.

One company carrying one of the top rated brands of ASHP told us this problem could be solved just by adjusting the duct sizing but when I questioned them about the fact that the ASHP would likely be running all day to keep the top level cool and that the lowest level ( where master bedroom is) would get almost too cold they suggested I just go from room to room in our house adjusting the registers each day until it was a comfortable temperature. The lowest level requires little to no cooling in the summer, 1/2 flight of stairs up to mid level and it is noticeably warmer, another 1/2 flight up to the top and it is unbearable reaching up to over +35C in the living and kitchen areas. Our house is 3 levels (back split) and we have 3 very definite temperature zones that are most noticeable in the summer. We had almost every company in our area come out to give us a quote and discovered it really does come down to the installer. You could buy the best unit on the market but if it isn't installed properly you will have problems with your system. After doing quite a bit of research on heat pumps we discovered that it basically boils down to your installer.

We are going with an air source heat pump (currently have electric baseboards) so that we get both heating and cooling. We also are in the midst of an addition and complete reno of our home.

Where we are now located gas is not available and air conditioning is a definite must to survive the summers. We moved from Vancouver a few years ago where we had a gas furnace and that was great as there was very little need for air conditioning there. We also live in British Columbia in the Okanagan.
